In November 2018, Penny was hired by a local pharmacy to train and work as a pharmacy technician. In order to start the training component, however, Penny had to pass a math test. Her math skills were rusty, so after two failed attempts, she called her job counselor in a panic. Her boss was giving her one more chance to pass or she would be terminated. Penny’s job counselor found a college student who was willing to tutor Penny weekends and evenings. The college student, Haydee, a physics major on winter break from Virginia Tech, worked with Penny for a total of six hours. Penny took the test and passed! All she needed was a little of the “it takes a village” philosophy to succeed. We are thrilled for Penny and very grateful to Haydee!
